Guide #1: How to write a blog post

Reading research papers is an important source of information for understanding the concepts in sketch recognition, and writing blog posts is an important way to help you understand the readings. Since blog posts are large part of your grade and since students would like more details on how to write a good blog post, this guide was written to provide some tips on how to do that.

The purpose of using blogs
This semester, you will be reading many research papers.  One way to help you remember the important concepts from all those papers is by blogging about those papers.  Writing blog posts on the papers you read will allow you to summarize the core concepts and why they are significant in sketch recognition research.

About research papers
Throughout the semester, you will be reading research papers from publications such as conferences and journals.  These research papers are typically divided into the following sections.
  1. Abstract.
  2. Introduction.
  3. Previous/Related Work.
  4. Implementation/Methodology
  5. Results
  6. Future Work
  7. Conclusion
While it's usually a good idea to read the entire paper, you will want to especially focus on #4 and #5 for your blog posts.

About reading research papers
Blogging about a research paper after reading a paper once is usually not a good idea, since you might miss some concepts on your first read.  As a recommendation, it is a good idea to read a paper three times:
  • Preview. Become familiar with the paper.
  • Read. Learn from the paper.
  • Review. Better understand the paper and find important information that you might have missed before.

Writing the summary section
The summary section should be the important research ideas from the paper. If you expand beyond those important research ideas, then you are more or less repeating the paper. Some questions you should address when writing the summary section is:
  • What is the research idea from this paper?
  • What improvements did the research in the paper do from previous research?
  • How did the authors of the paper reach the the result of their research?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of this research idea?

Writing the discussion section
The purpose of this section is to allow you to give opinions on the research of the paper.  Some questions that might be worth addressing include:
  • Why is the research idea from this paper important?
  • Do the results of the research match the original goals stated by the authors?
  • How would you improve the research idea from this paper?
  • How does this paper contribute to the field of sketch recognition?

Writing a comment on someone else's blog
In addition to writing your blog posts, you are also required to make comments on other people's blogs, specifically on their comments in their discussion section.  It's important to comment on their blogs, since they might bring up some ideas that you didn't think of, or might introduce an opinion that you might not agree with.  When writing your comments, be sure that your comments are at least 3-4 sentences.
